Talkeetna is the headquarters of mountain climbers preparing for the ascent of Mt. Denali. There is a mountain climbing school here.
It is a funky, artsy, organic, rugged little town. There is a wonderful view of Mt. Denali, 60 miles away, when the skies are clear.
The Wildflower Restaurant serves the best seafood chowder ever. It is filled with salmon bits, halibut bits, red potato chunks, heavy thick cream.
Glen and Trisha/Jeff had an open face halibut sandwich. Brady had halibut chunks with fries. Trisha, Tanner, and I each had a bowl of chowder. Landon had a burger. Natalie had a piece of pizza.
Plan A: take the air taxi for a ride around Mt. Denali, land on a glacier at 1:30. However, it is moved to 4:30, then finally cancelled for the day. It is re-re-scheduled for 1:30 Monday.
Plan B: go to the Zip Line company, go on the six o'clock tour. No...it is filled. 8:00 in the morning is open. OK, sign us for that.
Plan C: no rain, lots of sunshine. Go zip-lining, and go on plane ride.
Parking is limited on the few streets of Talkeetna. We walked to "downtown", touring the shops, buying an occasional trinket.

Not Mt. Denali. |
Just in case you come to Talkeetna and need an RV park. Talkeetna Camper Park is about the only choice in town. It is a 15 minute walk to "downtown." But, the sites are very close together, there is a rail pick-up for Princess Cruise Line passengers which is loud and noisy during the day (but you are mostly out doing "stuff") adjoining the camper park, and It just went by at 11:00 p.m. but did not blow its whistle this trip. It is very busy, and stays filled. I suggest calling at least two days ahead of schedule to verify and reserve sites.
on the drive here Glen and I saw a bear cub, but the rest of the group didn't. No pictures.
Greeting to everyone!!! Sounds like you are having a good time! Do you remember the TV series "Northern Exposure"? I have always heard it was loosely based on Talkeetna! Laurie Stults
