August 16, 2016--Birthday, Beach, and Rain Forest

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO GRANDSON NUMBER 1--Brady is 19 today!

Brady and his mother Trisha
The family group left this morning heading south on highway 101.  We turned left, mostly
east, going into the Hoh River Rain Forest.  This area of the Olympic National Park received on average 130 inches of rain per year.  Just 70 miles to the north and east, near Sequim, the annual average is 17-18 inches of rain.

The abundant rains allows the growth of moss on all surfaces.

This fallen Sitka Spruce is 38-40' around.  Glen, Gayla, Evelyn, Gary, Marcella, Jeff

Can you see Marcella on the far end of the Sitka Spruce trunk?

Gayla and Glen under the fern-covered root wad of a fallen tree.
Jeff, Marcella, and Evelyn walked a 3/4 mile trail while at the Visitors' Center.  Gary, Glen and I "people-watched" while they were hiking.

Upon the return to Highway 101 we went south to Ruby Beach, also part of the Olympic National Park. It was bright and sunny while traveling these 12 miles.

Here is what we found at the beach.

I spy a tiny pine cone that survived the violent waves that brought it to shore.

A cobblestone beach.

The beach is lined with rock stacks.

Can you imagine the powerful storms that were necessary to wash in these driftwood logs.

Dinner was in Forks WA, the setting of the "Twilight" books.

No sightings of vampires!
The town of Forks, population of 3545, certainly welcomes all who are interested in "Twilight"

Ending the day with a campfire and music!  Jeff, Evelyn, Marcella, Glen, Gary
