June 30 (Afternoon) and July 1, 2017 Amana Colonies (Amana Colony RV Park, Amana, IA)

Friday after the visit to the "Antique Archaeology" Store in LeClaire, IA we drove to the "Amana Colonies"!

Of course, this is on the grounds of the Antique Archaeology!"

There are seven Amana Colonies, established in 1855 as a communal society.  In the early 1700's in Germany there were two men began writing about their faith and beliefs, traveling about forming small congregations.  In 1842 followers came to America and settled in New York.  In 1899 the congregation of 1200 moved to Iowa and built a village.  The community came to own 26,000 acres.  The economic base for the village was communal life.  There was a total of 7 villages built.  "Everything from soap to stove wood was provided by the community.

Today there are many original buildings left.

Beautiful flowers in front of the store.

Amana Woolen Mill.  Blankets are still made here.

We ate dinner here: 'The Ronneburg" One of the Amana Colonies' original restaurants featuring German specialties.

Glen chose "Weinerschnitzel": veal cutlet wrapped in cracker crumbs.

I enjoyed "Jaeger Schnitzel":pork cutlet with cracker crumbs.  Delicious.
The evening's entertainment and performance extraordinaire was "Million Dollar Quartet", performed at The Creamery Theater.  This musical was based on a true one-night occurrence at Sun Records in Memphis, TN.  On December 4, 1956 Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash spent the evening together.  The performers were excellent; the music awesome.  It was a fantastic evening. Not all talented performers live in Nashville.  This cast of six was great/awesome/fantastic.  Can you tell we enjoyed it.

Today we visited a few more stores/buildings.
Heritage Designs Quilting and Needlework:  a haven for  quilters and stitchers.   Evelyn, and Jan,  you should see this!

We found this in "Amana General Store".  Who remembers "candy cigarettes"?

'The High Amana General Store""  Inside is the same as the past 100 years!

Inside the 'Broom and Basket Shop": the largest rocker made of walnut.

We will be heading south in the morning, back to Cape Girardeau.

We have enjoyed this jaunt through Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa, and Missouri.
