July 16, 2018 Traveling: Day One and Two: Going to Maine (Day 1, Arthur Illinois; Day 2: Sunbury, Ohio (Columbus North KOA)

It has been a busy two weeks since the last post.

Sunday, July 8, we drove to Alley Springs National Scenic Riverways, Jacks Fork River, Eminence MO.  It is the week for the 36th annual Whittle Camp out.  High, very high temperatures affected the attendance this year.  Tuesday and Wednesday the high temp was 107 degrees, and Friday and Saturday 111 degrees was the high.

We weren't anti social, but Glen and I spent the week indoors.

Trisha, Jeff, Tanner arrived on Tuesday.  Natalie and (boyfriend) Chandler arrived on Tuesday.  They floated the river in an inflatable raft on Wednesday.  Friends Chris and Elaine, Dallas, TX, arrived late Wednesday night.

The entire group floated Thursday in canoes and kayaks.  They repeated the experience on Friday.

Saturday most of the family group spent the day on/iat the "swim hole".  No floating.  Saturday is not a good day to be on the river!

Sunday, July 15, Glen and I left Alley Springs NSR, heading for Arthur, Illinois, where sister Myrna and companion Dick have been staying for two weeks.  They are parked at the farm that Dick owns, and has been in his family for four generations.  Gary and Evelyn were already there.  This group is heading to Lubec Maine, arriving on Thursday, July 19.

Today, July 16, was a most intense stressful travel day (maybe ever!)  I say "we" but of course Glen was doing the driving, were in and out of hard rain showers.  Then....we reached the western edge of Columbus Ohio where we hit city traffic.  And.....an accident had closed the interstate we needed to be on.  Off through the country we went.

One close call.
We were getting closer to the RV park, coming in on an alternate route because of the accident
when I saw a sign that said "height restriction 12' 5"".

Me: "Glen, what is our height?"
Glen: "12' 6" at the most".
Me: "Did you see that sign?"
Glen: "we will have to try it.  There is no place to turn around."
Me: Shrieking!
Glen: "Get out, and see if we are going to hit!"
Glen: slowly creeping under the railroad overpass.
Me: in the road, watching the motorhome, hoping the satellite dish is the tallest thing on the roof.

Sighing in relief.  We made it! We never need to try anything less than that.  It was close; very little clearance.

As soon as I saw the warning sign, I called Evelyn and learned they are 12' 9".  "Don't turn left.  Don't come this way!"  They didn't.  The GPS had to "recalculate".  They arrived about 15 minutes after us.

Finally, we are parked for the night.  Tomorrow takes us into New York, with a stop in Bath, NY!

Thursday, July 5, our friend Tom succumbed to the health issues which had been ravaging his body.  We attended the funeral on Monday, July 9, in Poplar Bluff MO.
