Wednesday, Thursday February 27/28, 2013

Wednesday:  just double-checked with Glen on yesterday's activities.  The floors were gritty and you could write your name on the window sills after Monday's wind storm.

We dusted; wiped all wood surfaces; vacuumed; took screens down, hosed, and re-installed; washed windows while screens were down; cleaned a/c vents.  Are you tired yet?  We were!

By the time we finished all that, the wind was blowing--again!  I dusted the window sills again! Cleaning up from a dust storm is easier than cleaning up from a blizzard!

Gary and Evelyn received a series of calls that informed them of the unexpected death of a young-43 years-man with whom Gary had worked for several years.  The co-op employee suffered an anuerism (I know this isn't spelled correctly but Spell Check isn't helping) and died at work. Gary had served as a mentor for him.  It was heart breaking for Gary.

Thursday:  the days of the weeks haven't been straight for me all week.  This morning Glen and Evelyn were making music, talking about which songs they were choosing.  I couldn't figure out why.  Duh, it was afternoon Jam Session time!

Fred and Gay were at the Jam Session.  All six of us met afterwards at the Catfish House for a late lunch.  After a few errands while in town we came home.  Fred and Gay arrived in 30-45 minutes for an evening of cards and conversation.

Tomorrow will be a busy day for the four of us!  We are hosting 6 couples and two widow ladies from the neighborhood  for an early dinner (4:30).  More details tomorrow evening.

What a Difference a Day Makes! 2-26-2013

Wow, the wind blew itself out of south Texas overnight.

The temps were warm, the skies were blue, and the breeze was gentle!

Glen checked out the "house" batteries...the ones that provide power to the inside of the motor home, not the engine battery.  The batteries  are in good shape.

I went to the local medical clinic this morning to have some lab work done.  The results will be faxed to the doctor in Missouri.

While in town I also stopped at the library,  returning books and checking out books.  The library is used a great deal by many of the winter Texans, not only for books to read but for computer use.

We checked in with our families today after the second winter storm in a week went through Arkansas and Missouri.  Reports ranged from small amounts of snow to 8-10 inches of snow to rain, and hail storms.

It's Tuesday, so there was Jam Session tonight.  Glen and Evelyn did their usual great job.

Tumbling Tumbleweeds! 2-25-2013

The neighbors gathered today at two p.m. for a moment of silence for the neighbor, Bob, who had lived across the street from us, and passed away a week ago.

March winds arrived today a few days ahead of schedule!  Wow-eee!  30 mph winds, gusts in the 40mph-range.  Humidity has been ONE percent all day, now up to 37 percent.  Dust was in the air all day.  At certain times during the day the air was so dusty town couldn't be seen.  The tumbleweeds were certainly "tumblin'"!!

Because of the wind we mostly have spent the day inside!

There was no music playing tonight in the outdoor living space.  Instead we four--Gary and Evelyn, Glen and I, went to Fred and Gay's home (fifth wheel RV).  There is plenty of room for all of us.

Week-End Report

We made a trip south to the 'lower valley' ....Mission, McAllen, Alamo, Donna, yesterday morning.

First on the agenda was crossing the border into "Progresso".  We continue to be amazed at the number of dentists, pharmacies, optical doctors, jewelry vendors, purse vendors, beauty salons; even more amazing is the number of winter Texans there taking advantage of the "bargains".

We know people who go their for their dental work.  Note to Dr. Gary:  not us!

We ate lunch at the Red Snapper.  For those worried or concerned about restaurant health issues, let me assure the Red Snapper is much more clean and modern than some of the restaurants here in Zapata!  Does that make you feel better--ha, ha!

Today we ate lunch at the Holiday with the usual church group.  There was an immediate need for a nap when we got home. :}  We visited with several of the neighbors late in the afternoon.

My Gramps would say that you need to carry rocks in your pockets tomorrow.  There is a "Red Flag Warning" issued from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday.  Winds are forecast to be 30-40 mph from the North, with single digit humidity in the afternoon.  Other than the usual wind concerns the low humidity coupled with the EXTREME dry conditions here equals a high fire danger.

I assume all this wind is associated with the next storm coming from the west into the central states.  I know the Kansas City area is expecting as big a snow storm on Tuesday/Wednesday as they experienced last week. There won't be much sitting outside tomorrow!

Friday Afternoon Show 2-22-2013

This afternoon was the last of the variety shows scheduled for the winter season.  The organizer/scheduler said in another two weeks "people would be leaving the area."

"The Jay and Tammy Show" performed today.  Wow, what talented musicians!  Tammy played a bass guitar and Jay played the electric guitar.  Plus, both are outstanding singers.  They sang/played country/western, gospel, 60's pop, etc.....just what the audience of 65-85 year-old Winter Texans wanted to hear.

Jay and Tammy have a summer home on Prince Edward Island, and spend the winter in Weslaco, TX.    They also told us that they are occasionally on RFD-TV.  I highly recommend that if you have the opportunity to hear/watch them, to do so!

Glen spent some time working on the "outdoor" television.  The picture quality wasn't up to par...to expectations.  After some experimenting, changing wires, connections, moving the TV inside the mh....you get the picture, it was decided that the television is okay.  The wiring to the signal splitter was suspect or the splitter itself is a cheap model.

Like most days today started cloudy, ending the day with some clouds.  The low and high were 57/84 degrees.

How's the weather where you are?

The NO Complaint Department

There are NO complaints from this part of the country!  After talking to family and friends in Arkansas and Missouri and learning of ice, slush, snow, frozen rain, school dismissals, and cold temperatures, we are quite satisfied with where we are....and the weather conditions.

High today of 85 degrees and mostly cloudy.

Hot cards games tonight, sitting in the outdoor living space.  However, we did have to turn on the fan to blow the bugs/insects away from the table!  :}

This an Audubon Oriole that enjoys the grape jelly or an orange half at our feeder.

This is a Cactus Wren.  Notice the effective camouflage.  The cactus wren is very curious and nosy,  likes suet.

85 degrees gives lots of fishermen a reason to be on the lake.

"Cat's Claw" in bloom.  Notice the thorns also.
Birds on the move!

Quiet Day at Home

It has been a quiet day in the neighborhood.

Glen, Evelyn, and I spent a lot of time reading.

I finished 'Killing Kennedy' by Bill O'Reilly.  I must say I enjoyed the book more than I anticipated.  The style of the writing feeds the reader history without choking! :}

I learned a great deal about John Kennedy, the Kennedy family, and on the flip side of history, Lee Harvey Oswald.

I am interested now in reading "Killing Lincoln" by the same author.  Evelyn just finished this book, and said she learned lots.

It has been WINDY all day!  Currently the wind speed is ranging from 13 to 21 mph.
Temps today:  67 to 85 degrees, with mostly cloudy skies.

This is much better than mid-America.  Our daughter in the Ft. Smith AR area is reporting 5 or so inches of snow.  Our son in southeast Missouri says "wintry" conditions tomorrow with icy conditions....a minimum of 1/4" of ice on everything.

Unexpected News 2-19-2013

Bob, our neighbor that lives across the street, has been in the hospital for ten days.  He has not received a good diagnosis.  But, today at noon he passed away at the hospital.

In the small world category, Bob was raised in Poplar Bluff, MO where we lived for 37 years.  He lived here when my grandparents bought in the 1970's, also obviously knew my parents when they were here.

He helped us in many ways get things established.  Bob lived here year-round and always kept an eye on our place when we were gone.

Bob did not have children; and in many ways, the neighbors were his "family". This is a good neighborhood and everyone looks after and cares for each neighbor.

The Jam Session tonight was excellent!  Everyone had a good rhythm and performed well.

The usual group met after the Jam Session at Dairy Queen.  The Blizzards are tasty but the camaraderie and jokes are even better.

Hope you are having a good week.

Spring Is Here...hopefully!

The sage is blooming,
The yucca are starting to bloom,
The birds are singing their "welcome to spring" song,
The temperature reached 90 degrees at our place this afternoon, **
The rabbits are frolicking,
The ki-zillion stars are so bright.

I hope this means spring is here.  I am going to hang a hummingbird feeder tomorrow.

**Our friend, Fred, who lives about one mile from here, said his thermometer said "94 degrees" this afternoon.

Fred and Gay came over this evening for music and conversation.  It is always a fun evening.  The flitting bugs sometimes caused hazardous conditions for the singers.  I know Glen swallowed at least one!

Week-End Report

Saturday:  Glen, what happened yesterday?  Glen: I don't remember anything.

I think it must have been a really quiet day.
We sat outdoors and watched the sad-ending Missouri basketball game.  Enough said about that.  Dinner in town.
Finished the day with card games with Evelyn and Gary.

Today:  Worship, Sunday School, and lunch with the church group in town.

I didn't realize I needed a two-hour nap until I looked at the clock when I finally awoke; and it was two hours later!

Tonight we were invited to a "karaoke" party at a neighbor's.  Jim, the host, has a complete set up for karaoke.  There were probably ten different people that entertained the rest of us.  It was a fun evening.

How was your week-end?

Fed Ex Delivers

A neighbor shared a bag of broccoli with us.  I decided to make broccoli cheddar soup. There was enough broccoli to make a big batch.

Gary and Evelyn provided a smoke pork loin sandwich to go with the soup.  It was a great lunch.

We fixed a container of soup for Shirley who shared the broccoli with us, along with a sandwich.

Fed Ex arrived mid-morning with the new Directv receiver.  Speedy delivery.

We contacted an agent at Directv, and spent 57 minutes on the phone with her.  The receiver worked as soon as it was hooked up.  I really think the picture on the TV screen is better and brighter than with the "old" receiver.

What took so-o-o long was a change in programming.  We are using the same channel package that we have had from the very beginning, at least ten years.  This package included 671---Fox Midwest Sports which carries the St. Louis Cardinals, and Missouri Tigers.

After the nearly hour-long conversation with the first agent, and a second conversation with a second agent, we learned/were told that to receive 671 we would have to buy a sports package of 30+ channels.  No more "grandfathering"  channel 671 in to the program bundle.

We 'bit the bullet' and ordered the new package.  We did think long and hard about the dollars versus the baseball and basketball we would miss.

Weather: bright sunshine with fluffy and puffy white clouds, temps: 49/80 for low and high.

Happy Valentine's Day 2-14-2013

Hope you remembered to tell your sweetie how much you appreciate her/him!

Glen and Evelyn sang love songs to their sweeties sitting in the audience at this afternoon's jam session.  I appreciated the songs and the sentiments and I am sure so do Gary!

It was a good Jam Session.  The performers did exceptionally well.  One of the musicians plays a trumpet.  He accompanies the other musicians on familar songs!  I would guesstimate his age to be 82? 83?.  All of the musicians are a testament to keeping busy at something one enjoys.

I forgot to mention last evening that we are out of satellite service.  No TV!  It was working one second and the next the TV screen was black and no volume.  The satellite receiver crashed.

We spent several minutes on the phone with a tech from Directv, verifying that it could not be revived.  They are sending a new receiver via Fed Ex, delivery in two to four days.

Tonight was the regular six-handed pitch games.  We sat in the Outdoor Living Space to play.  It was quite comfortable until the last 30 minutes when the wind speed increased, making it feel cooler.

Chef Gary provided home-made lemon bars, made with fresh lemon juice from lemons just picked from the neighbor's tree.  The bars were delicious!!!! Thanks, Gary.

Weather: sunny; 42/77 low and high for today.

Here's the Surprise!

Top: Westwind corporate jet landing at Laredo, TX airport
Bottom: our son-in-law, Jeff, on left, the pilot for the jet.

Jeff and copilot Gene flew two businessmen from Ft. Smith AR to Laredo this morning.  Glen and I met them at the airport and took Jeff and Gene to lunch.  The businessmen were met by their contacts and taken to a meeting.  After lunch at our favorite Mexican restaurant we took Jeff and Gene back to the airport so they wouldn't be late, and to prepare the plane for the next flight.

From Laredo the group went to New Mexico for another meeting, and then back to Ft. Smith at the end of the day.

It was great to see Jeff and be able to visit with him for the 90 minutes or so.  Jeff's job enables him to see many parts of the country, often numerous parts of the country in one day!

We made a stop at Sam's Club and Lowe's after lunch.

I hope we have let Gary know how much we appreciate him and the work he does for us.  Since we have constructed the outdoor kitchen, the lighting needed to be re-done.

While we were gone today Gary moved one light out of the kitchen to the open area; then wired for another light and a switch in the kitchen area.  That light now turns off/on with the new switch.

Here is one of my favorite, more colorful birds that come to the feeders.  This is called a Green Jay.  The colors are vivid.  Think blue jay in a different suit of feathers!

Weather: blue skies, temps: 55/74 degrees!  Beautiful day.

Mowing the Yard

Glen mowed the neighbor's yard this morning.  The neighbor, Bob, actually waters the grass once in awhile so there is green showing.  Bob also happens to be in the hospital.

We didn't want his place to look like no one is in the house.  The place does look better, less scruffy.

Our place, however, does not need mowing.  After the one inch that came in the first couple of weeks after we arrived there has been no rain/moisture.

There were 17 on the performance stage tonight at the Jam Session.  This is probably the prime night...the best attendance, for the season.

Eleven of us convened at the Dairy Queen for a blizzard after the Jam.  I just had a "mini" sized blizzard!

There is a surprise (for you) tomorrow.  Stay tuned to read about the fun day Wednesday.

Monday, Monday

The cleaning bug hit today.  Both Evelyn and I spent the morning cleaning our rigs.  It does look better inside our rig.

There were at least two (male) persons taking naps this afternoon!

Glen and I tried a new-to-us restaurant for lunch.  It was okay, not really bad, but different that what we like.  In other words, we probably won't go back.

Gay brought "monkey bread" for dessert tonight.  The music tonight was exceptionally great, I thought.  I am just the audience, but it really sounded good.

Weather: 62-81 degrees.  Often the mornings are cloudy with the sun breaking through at midday or later.  Such was the case today.

Sunday, February 10, 2013

It has been a typical, quiet Sunday here in south Texas.

Church.

Lunch with a group from church.

Reading and watching basketball in the Outdoor Living Space.

Visiting with a couple of neighbors.

No nap today.

Hope your Sunday has been just what you wanted.

A bit of wildlife for you today.  This is a curved-bill thrasher feeding at the suet feeder.

At church this morning a friend and neighbor, Mark, mentioned that he had caught a Mexican milk snake at his work place, out in the desert, and taken it home. We took Flat Stanley over to see it.  Mark said it is just the second one he has ever seen here in Zapata, and he has lived here all his life.

Friends and Movies 2-9-2013

The local Lutheran church held a "chili and soup" luncheon today.  There was a choice of homemade chili or chicken 'n' noodles, with cole slaw, drink, and homemade dessert for $6 each.

I had chili and Glen had chicken n noodles.  Both were exceptionally delicious.

We were home from the dinner in time to watch the second half of Mizzou basketball.  It was a winner.  It was a fun game to watch.

Late in the afternoon friends/neighbors Jim and Dee stopped to visit for an hour or so.  We have a great neighborhood.

It was "movie night" at church this evening.  We watched "Last Ounce of Courage" with Darrell Campbell as director/screenwriter.  Darrell is the brother of our brother-in-law, got that?  Glen and Evelyn's youngest sister, Mildred, is married to Doug, who is brother of Darrell.

It is a good movie with a powerful message.  If you haven't seen it, we recommend it especially if you are 'proud to be an American", concerned about our (America) freedoms-or loss of, and aren't afraid to show your patriotism.

Weather: started cloudy and 62 degrees, sunshine this afternoon with temperature reaching 87 degrees.

Great to be outdoors.

The "Gomer and Patsy" Show

This after we attended the "Gomer and Patsy" show at the nearby rv park.

Patsy and Gary Crane (Crain?) performed for for two hours.  Patsy and Gary are from Searcy, Arkansas, but spend the winter in south Texas, performing several times a week.

Gary is a man with many voices.  There were performances by "Gomer", "Barney Fife", "Dean Martin", "the Duke-John Wayne", "Walter Brennan", "Elvis", and a few others.  Many times the character would have some comedy lines and sing.  He did an excellent job.  "Go-ll-ee!"--Gomer Pyle.

Patsy sang in the style of Brenda Lee, Patsy Cline,  Connie Francis.  She also did an excellent job.

It was an afternoon of many laughs and great entertainment.

Glen, Evelyn, and I did a bike ride through the neighborhood after the entertainment.

Weather: high 78 degrees; low 63 degrees.  Cloudy until mid-afternoon.

Random.....thoughts!

Glen and I did some research this morning on getting lab work done here in Zapata with results sent back to our doctors in Missouri.

We found that lab orders have to originate in Texas.  What will be done is we check in with a doctor here, he will write the orders, and then lab work can be done.

Glen's first errand of Friday will be lab work!

Glen and Evelyn and I went to the afternoon jam session.  Today there were only seven performers, which allows lots of time for each performer.

Chef Gary perform his magic while we were gone!  There was a delicious meatloaf, baked sweet potatoes, salad, and baked beans for all when we got home.

Gay and Fred came over about seven for a few games of "19-point Pitch."  Our team---Gary, Gay, and me--lost every game!

Gary also baked a cake for the evening dessert.  It was a strawberry cake with a cheesecake topping.

The day started with clouds and a mist that could barely be felt.  About three the clouds parted, and the sun broke through.  Temperatures then reached 82 degrees.

Tuesday, February 5, 2013

It's Tuesday

It has been quiet in the neighborhood the past few days.

Today there has been lots of sitting in the recliners with either a book or Kendle, occasionally watching the birds at the feeders.

This afternoon Evelyn and Glen played/practiced music, choosing the songs for tonight's Jam Session!

Glen and Evelyn performed beautifully tonight--as usual.

After the Jam Session seven of us met at the Dairy Queen.  It has become a tradition to meet there and have a blizzard of one's favorite flavor.

Two weeks in a row the DQ was OUT OF ICE CREAM.  I am not kidding.  No ice cream for blizzards.  Service is also SLOW!  Five of us had gotten our Blizzards and finished them before the last two were served!  But, you know, that is okay.  It was just extra time to visit and laught!

Guest Chef

Long-time readers may remember that last winter we wanted to have Reuben sandwiches but couldn't find deli corned beef at any grocery store.

This winter Gary and Evelyn brought corned beef with them from Missouri!  That's thinking ahead!

Today Chef Gary did all of the prep work for the Reuben sandwiches, made a "popcorn salad", and put baked beans in the slow cooker.

I made a layered pudding/cream cheese dessert.

Gay and Fred came 30 minutes early tonight to join us for the sandwich dinner.  Chef Gary prepared the sandwiches on the griddle; we enjoyed the dinner in the outdoor living space.

Delicious meal, Chef Gary!

The music tonight was outstanding!  The Fab Four are getting better each time they are together!

Of course there was great conversation to go with the dinner, music and dessert!

Today's high temperature: 87 degrees
Today's low temperature: 60 degrees
Blue, blue skies!

Superbowl Sunday

Superbowl Sunday! Do I need to say more?

Did you have a party? company? Not even watch the game? Go somewhere?

Gary, Evelyn, Glen and I sat outdoors and watched the game until half-time when the game was put on pause, and we all went indoors.

It turned into quite a game.  I didn't really have a favorite, but the drama--lights out!---turned it into a close, watcheable game.

Hope you had a great week end.

Saturday, Feb 2

Late Friday night we decided to go to Laredo Saturday morning.  Both Glen and I had prescriptions to be picked up at Walmart Pharmacy.

So-o--o, that is what we did!

First stop was at Walmart.  Of course there was other things to pick up beside the medication!

Then off to Lowe's, and Sam's Club.

The final stop was "Paraque's Grill".  This is a great Mexican restaurant.

As soon as we were seated the waiter brought homemade corn and flour tortilla chips with four kinds of dip---a re fried bean dip, a tomato-ey salsa, an avocado based dip, and a too-hot-to-eat pico do gallo.

The two couples each shared an entree, which was plenty for each of us.  Glen and I had shrimp fajitas, and Gary and Evelyn had shrimp tacos.  Oh, boy, were they delicious.

Upon return to home we put away all of the things we had bought, and  relaxed for a couple of hours.

Because, we then went to church for "movie night".  The church was dark and locked when we arrived.  Fred and Gay and another car drove up.  A call to the preacher revealed that movie night had been moved to next Saturday night.  Plan B went into action--invite Fred and Gay over to our place.

They accepted and we played cards until 9:30!
